The McGinnis Psychology Group, we think, represents a different kind of psychological practice. Our doctors are behavioral psychologists – technically, clinical behavior analysts – who are dedicated to the competent and ethical provision of effective and efficient assessment, treatment, and consultation services for children, families, and adults.

Our Solutions over Labels TM Approach

family behavorial psychology in Fort Myers, FloridaOur approach reflects a deep commitment to the scientific evidence for “what works” in outpatient psychology. It is solution-focused and skill-based, and it often does not take very long to see results. It is not about thinking differently but actually doing things differently. It is not about learning to cope with stress as much as it is about doing the hard work to eliminate the sources of stress. It is not about learning to feel better about yourself but actually earning healthier self-esteem through accomplishing tough goals. It is not about processing the past but living more effectively in the now. Diagnostic labels in psychology – although at times important – are not emphasized and referral concerns are not prejudged to be brain-based or anyone’s fault. Our primary focus is not to label the problem, but to solve it, using evidence-based approaches and procedures. And such efforts are made by our doctors with equal measures of competence, dedication, empathy, and optimism.

Children experiencing academic, emotional, behavioral, or social difficulties, parents in need of more effective parenting tools, and adults seeking greater personal effectiveness and life satisfaction are seen daily. With children and families, examples of typical referral concerns of parents and pediatricians include disruptive, defiant, and aggressive behavior, depression, fears and anxieties, habits and tics, school refusal, academic underperformance, social skills deficits, sleep difficulties, toileting problems, feeding problems, and sibling fighting. Often parents seek one or two visits just for help making the daily routines (e.g., getting ready for school, homework, bedtime) run more smoothly.

With adults, examples of typical reasons cited for seeking services include anxiety, depression, and distractibility, and of course, just needing to talk things out in a safe, confidential setting. Everyone can use a little direction from an objective advisor in times of stress or difficult life transitions.
